Bài học A Closer Look 2 thuộc Unit 7 “Natural Wonders of the World” tập trung vào điểm ngữ pháp quan trọng: Reported speech (Yes/No questions) – Câu tường thuật dạng câu hỏi Yes/No. Đây là phần nối tiếp kiến thức về câu tường thuật dạng câu trần thuật và câu hỏi Wh- mà học sinh đã học trước đó.
I. Ngữ pháp (Grammar): Reported Speech – Yes/No Questions
Khung Remember! (SGK trang 76)
- Khi tường thuật câu hỏi Yes/No, chúng ta thường dùng động từ asked hoặc wanted to know.
- Chúng ta dùng trật tự từ của câu trần thuật (KHÔNG đảo ngữ).
- Chúng ta dùng if / whether + mệnh đề.

Các quy tắc cần nhớ
1. Động từ tường thuật: Dùng asked hoặc wanted to know (KHÔNG dùng said, told, advised, ordered).
2. Thêm if / whether: Thay cho cấu trúc câu hỏi Yes/No, thêm if hoặc whether (cả hai đều đúng).
3. Lùi thì (Backshift):

5. Trật tự từ: Dùng trật tự câu trần thuật (S + V), KHÔNG đảo ngữ như câu hỏi.
❌ SAI: She asked was the weather good …
✅ ĐÚNG: She asked if the weather was good …
II. Hướng dẫn giải bài tập
Task 1: Choose the correct answer A, B, C, or D to complete each question
Chọn đáp án đúng A, B, C hoặc D để hoàn thành mỗi câu.
1. “Will pollution endanger the wildlife here?” Kate asked. → Kate _______ if pollution would endanger the wildlife there.
→ Đáp án: C. wanted to know
→ Giải thích: Khi tường thuật câu hỏi Yes/No, ta dùng asked hoặc wanted to know. Loại A (told me – dùng cho câu trần thuật), B (said to me – dùng cho câu trần thuật), D (questions me – sai ngữ pháp). Chỉ có C. wanted to know đúng cấu trúc tường thuật câu hỏi. Lưu ý: “here” → “there”, “will” → “would”.
→ Dịch: Kate muốn biết liệu ô nhiễm có gây nguy hiểm cho động vật hoang dã ở đó không.
2. “Are you enjoying your flight?” the stewardess asked me. → The stewardess asked me if I _______ my flight.
→ Đáp án: B. was enjoying
→ Giải thích: Câu trực tiếp dùng thì hiện tại tiếp diễn (are enjoying) → tường thuật lùi thì thành quá khứ tiếp diễn (was enjoying). Loại A (am enjoying – không lùi thì), C (enjoyed – quá khứ đơn, sai thì), D (would enjoy – sai thì).
→ Dịch: Tiếp viên hàng không hỏi tôi liệu tôi có đang thưởng thức chuyến bay không.
3. “Is Ganh Da Dia in Phu Yen Province, Phong?” → She asked Phong _______ in Phu Yen Province.
→ Đáp án: C. whether Ganh Da Dia was
→ Giải thích: Tường thuật câu hỏi Yes/No cần if/whether + trật tự câu trần thuật (S + V). Loại A (was Ganh Da Dia – đảo ngữ, sai trật tự), B (if Ganh Da Dia is – không lùi thì), D (if it is Ganh Da Dia – không lùi thì, sai cấu trúc). Chỉ C vừa có “whether”, vừa lùi thì (is → was), vừa đúng trật tự.
→ Dịch: Cô ấy hỏi Phong liệu Gành Đá Đĩa có ở tỉnh Phú Yên không.
4. “Can I take a photo inside the cave?” he said to the guide. → He _______ the guide if he could take a photo inside the cave.
→ Đáp án: A. asked
→ Giải thích: Tường thuật câu hỏi Yes/No dùng asked hoặc wanted to know. Loại B (said – dùng cho câu trần thuật), C (advised – khuyên), D (ordered – ra lệnh). Chỉ A. asked phù hợp với cấu trúc tường thuật câu hỏi. Lưu ý: “can” → “could”.
→ Dịch: Anh ấy hỏi hướng dẫn viên liệu anh ấy có thể chụp ảnh bên trong hang động không.
5. “Is the weather good in Sa Pa in the winter?” → She wanted to know _______
→ Đáp án: D. if the weather was good in Sa Pa in the winter.
→ Giải thích: Cần if/whether + trật tự câu trần thuật (S + V) + lùi thì (is → was). Loại A (đảo ngữ “was the weather good” + dấu hỏi – sai), B (không lùi thì “is”), C (đảo ngữ “whether was the weather” – sai trật tự). Chỉ D đúng tất cả: có “if”, đúng trật tự (the weather was), lùi thì, không có dấu hỏi cuối câu.
→ Dịch: Cô ấy muốn biết liệu thời tiết ở Sa Pa có tốt vào mùa đông không.

Task 2: Complete the following reported questions
Hoàn thành các câu tường thuật sau.
1. “Are you excited about your upcoming trip to Mui Ne?” → He asked the children if they were _______
→ Đáp án: He asked the children if they were excited about their upcoming trip to Mui Ne.
→ Giải thích: “are” → were (lùi thì). “You” → they (vì hỏi the children). “Your” → their.
→ Dịch: Anh ấy hỏi bọn trẻ liệu chúng có hào hứng về chuyến đi sắp tới đến Mũi Né không.
2. “Do you often meet Angela at school?” → She asked us whether we _______
→ Đáp án: She asked us whether we often met Angela at school.
→ Giải thích: “Do you often meet” → bỏ “Do”, lùi thì “meet” → met. “You” → we (đã cho sẵn).
→ Dịch: Cô ấy hỏi chúng tôi liệu chúng tôi có thường gặp Angela ở trường không.
3. “Will you visit Giang Dien Waterfall next week?” → She wanted to know if Mark _______
→ Đáp án: She wanted to know if Mark would visit Giang Dien Waterfall the following week.
→ Giải thích: “Will” → would (lùi thì). “You” → Mark (đã cho sẵn). “Next week” → the following week.
→ Dịch: Cô ấy muốn biết liệu Mark có đến thăm Thác Giang Điền vào tuần sau không.
4. “Is Con Dao National Park rich in flora and fauna?” → I asked the teacher _______
→ Đáp án: I asked the teacher if / whether Con Dao National Park was rich in flora and fauna.
→ Giải thích: Thêm if/whether + trật tự câu trần thuật. “Is” → was (lùi thì). “Flora and fauna” = hệ thực vật và động vật.
→ Dịch: Tôi hỏi giáo viên liệu Vườn quốc gia Côn Đảo có giàu hệ thực vật và động vật không.
5. “Can we go to the campsite by bike?” → Arthur wanted to know _______
→ Đáp án: Arthur wanted to know if / whether they could go to the campsite by bike.
→ Giải thích: “Can” → could (lùi thì). “We” → they (vì Arthur thuật lại lời của nhóm mình).
→ Dịch: Arthur muốn biết liệu họ có thể đến khu cắm trại bằng xe đạp không.

Task 3: Rewrite the sentences in reported questions
Viết lại các câu ở dạng câu hỏi tường thuật.
1. “Are you still working from home?” I asked my dad.
→ Đáp án: I asked my dad if / whether he was still working from home.
→ Giải thích: “Are you” → he was (đổi đại từ + lùi thì). “You” → “he” vì hỏi “my dad”.
→ Dịch: Tôi hỏi bố liệu bố có còn đang làm việc ở nhà không.
2. “Do you have to pack your suitcase, Anne?” said Mark.
→ Đáp án: Mark asked Anne if / whether she had to pack her suitcase.
→ Giải thích: “Do you have to” → bỏ “Do”, lùi thì “have to” → had to. “You/your” → she/her (vì hỏi Anne).
→ Dịch: Mark hỏi Anne liệu cô ấy có phải đóng gói vali không.
3. Lan: “Are you interested in visiting Phu Quoc Island, Tom?”
→ Đáp án: Lan asked Tom if / whether he was interested in visiting Phu Quoc Island.
→ Giải thích: “Are you” → he was. “You” → “he” vì hỏi Tom.
→ Dịch: Lan hỏi Tom liệu anh ấy có quan tâm đến việc thăm đảo Phú Quốc không.
4. “Can we afford to go to Niagara Falls, Mum?” said Kay.
→ Đáp án: Kay asked her mum if / whether they could afford to go to Niagara Falls.
→ Giải thích: “Can” → could. “We” → they. “Afford to” = có đủ khả năng (tài chính) để làm gì.
→ Dịch: Kay hỏi mẹ liệu họ có đủ khả năng đi Thác Niagara không.
5. “Will they visit Sa Pa and climb Mount Fansipan this summer?”
→ Đáp án: I asked / wanted to know if / whether they would visit Sa Pa and climb Mount Fansipan that summer.
→ Giải thích: “Will” → would. “This summer” → that summer. Không có người hỏi cụ thể nên có thể dùng “I asked” hoặc “I wanted to know”.
→ Dịch: Tôi hỏi / muốn biết liệu họ có đến thăm Sa Pa và leo núi Fansipan vào mùa hè đó không.

→ The guide asked them if / whether it was their first time there.
→ Giải thích: “Is” → was. “Your” → their (vì hỏi nhóm du khách). “Here” → there.
→ Dịch: Hướng dẫn viên hỏi họ liệu đây có phải lần đầu tiên họ đến đó không.
2. “Do the people here live on fishing?”
→ Olivia asked the guide if / whether the people there lived on fishing.
→ Giải thích: Bỏ “Do”, lùi thì “live” → lived. “Here” → there.
→ Dịch: Olivia hỏi hướng dẫn viên liệu người dân ở đó có sống bằng nghề đánh cá không.
3. “Do their children go to school on land?”
→ Mark asked the guide if / whether their children went to school on land.
→ Giải thích: Bỏ “Do”, lùi thì “go” → went.
→ Dịch: Mark hỏi hướng dẫn viên liệu con cái họ có đi học trên đất liền không.
Task 5: Work in two groups
Nhóm A đưa ra 3 câu hỏi Yes/No trực tiếp. Nhóm B chuyển chúng thành câu tường thuật. Sau đó đổi vai. Nhóm nào có nhiều đáp án đúng hơn sẽ thắng.
Ví dụ trong SGK:
Group A: “Is the Atacama Desert in Chile?”
Group B: She asked if the Atacama Desert was in Chile.
